SEO Titles and Meta Descriptions: A Plain-English Writing Guide

Write clear SEO titles and meta descriptions that match each page, explain its value and avoid repetitive keyword lists or misleading promises.

An SEO title and meta description help describe a page before someone visits it. They should make the page’s subject and usefulness clear—not try to squeeze every service your business offers into one small preview.

Start by deciding the main purpose of the page. Then write a title and description that honestly represent the content visitors will find.

Give the title one clear subject

A practical structure is the page’s main topic followed by a concise brand name. For a fictional studio, “Product Photography for Independent Shops | Example Studio” is more informative than “Home” or a string of repeated photography terms.

Keep titles distinct across the site. Google recommends concise, descriptive titles and may create a different title link from other page signals. An SEO plugin preview is a guide, not a guarantee of the exact search appearance. See Google’s title-link guidance.

Make the description a useful invitation

Explain what the visitor can learn or do on the page. Include a meaningful detail where it helps: the audience, service scope or question answered. Avoid unsupported claims such as guaranteed results or being the leading provider.

For an educational article, describe the answer rather than pretending it is a service page. “Learn what to prepare before a website build, including copy, images and approvals” is a more accurate invitation than “Buy the best website today.”

Treat length guides as guides

Search previews can be shortened according to the available display space. Google can also use page content instead of your meta description when it better matches a query. There is no fixed character count that guarantees every word will appear. Google explains this in its snippet documentation.

Put the important information early and remove words that do not help someone choose. Do not damage an otherwise clear sentence merely to turn a plugin indicator green.

Use a simple review routine

Check that the title, main heading and page content agree. Remove outdated offers, duplicate descriptions and claims the page does not support. After saving, inspect the actual public page metadata rather than assuming the field was stored correctly.

These details are part of good page hygiene, not a standalone ranking solution. StartBright’s SEO service can help connect your search appearance with useful content and a clear customer journey.

A little clarity for your next chapter.
