I’ve been meeting recently with social entrepreneurs, running all manner of early stage businesses. It’s been great fun and personally inspiring to re-engage in a start up environment. 

A social enterprise that provides employment and training for adults with learning difficulties is set to support other aspiring social entrepreneurs by sharing the secrets of its business success.  

Seven ambitious social enterprises in Scotland - ranging from a community bakery in the Borders to a go karting racetrack in the Highlands – have been awarded almost £130,000 in seed funding as part of LaunchMe, a unique new business accelerator programme.

Three social entrepreneurs setting up cafes in Glasgow and Fife to benefit their local communities have been awarded places on Firstport’s ‘Ditto’ programme. The entrepreneurs will each receive tailored business support, a detailed Ditto business manual and a share of over £12,000 which will allow them to take their businesses to the next level. 

The first successful applicants to LaunchMe, Scotland’s first social enterprise accelerator programme, were unveiled in Edinburgh last night. (Thursday 4 September)

Social entrepreneurs around Scotland are celebrating today after being awarded grants from Firstport’s ‘Social Entrepreneurs Fund’.

A project which helped young entrepreneurs start their own social enterprises and revive Glasgow’s high streets is opening its doors to the public over the next week.

Nominations are now open for the Herald Society awards. This year, Firstport is supporting a new category which will recognise people who have set up and run a business driven by social aims and objectives.

Beyond the Finish Line, a new programme by Firstport and Ice Cream Architecture, challenges young people to revitalise their local areas using social enterprise ideas.


Three short films produced from the hugely successful ‘Social Entrepreneur Chat Show’, which featured among its star guests the international entrepreneur and Co-Founder of the Homeless World Cup, Mel Young, have been released for online viewers on youtube.

Category 3 of the Enterprise Ready Fund can support smaller capital, marketing or training costs directly linked to trading or income-generating activities.
